The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust needs volunteers to help carry out water vole surveys along the River Whitewater and stretches of the River Loddon in north-east Hampshire starting in early April.

Water voles used to be a common sight on many streams and rivers. However, they have declined dramatically in numbers and are now one of the UK's most threatened species. Their decline is due to a number of factors including habitat loss and predation by non-native American Mink.

Occasional sightings mean that it is known that there are water voles still present in the Loddon area. However, the exact status of water voles in the area is not known because much of the information is out of date and many areas have not been surveyed.

With your help the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust can fill these information gaps. Once the Wildlife Trust is aware of where water voles are present we can help landowners to manage habitats sympathetically.

The surveys will start in April and carry on throughout the summer. No previous experience is necessary as all training will be given. Own transport is desirable but expenses can be paid.
